HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DETECTION TOOL

No matter if you are scanning to avoid drilling disasters or for structural analysis, we have the right tools, software and training for your business

Before we get started:  you could read entire books about detections systems and concrete scanners, but nothing beats seeing them in action. To make an informed choice, you need to consider three aspects of your projects. Typical applications are the most important – are you scanning to avoid hitting rebar, or for structural analysis, or both? Once this has been decided, the scale and frequency of scanning jobs plays a role, followed by if you need to save the data for detailed analysis and report creation. Contact your local Account Manager or Hilti Store to get hands-on experience with any of our structural analysis tools and see how your business can benefit from them.

Every Hilti detection system is designed for real jobsites:

  • Easy to use – designed to require no specialist training to start using
  • Rugged – built to resist dust, splashes and shocks
  • Versatile – expanded functionality to offer new business possibilities beyond their primary function

1. What application do I need a concrete scanner for?

Avoiding hidden objects

Before drilling, coring, sawing and cutting, the most important consideration is the scanner's accuracy. For precision, radar-based concrete scanners are the first choice.

Pocket-sized tools, such as the PX 10 and PS 50, are economical and very easy to use – ideal for quick, on-the-job rebar location before you drill. High-end scanners, such as the PS 1000, can penetrate deeper into the concrete and provide more detail in real time.

Structural analysis

Three features are important here: accuracy, live feedback and documention. By combining a Ferroscan (magnetic induction) device with PROFIS Detection software, you get all three.

The PS 300 has a detailed color display which provides a live indication of cover depth, diameter and material – so you can be sure that the data you are collecting is enough to avoid a second site visit. Stored data is then transferred to PROFIS Software for detailed analysis in 2D and 3D, leading to one-click report generation.

Building inspections

Scanning concrete for building inspections depends on accuracy and live feedback, but the scale at which you work plays an important role.

Engineering reports at domestic scale could be completed with a PS 50 multidetector. This is a versatile, economical solution for mapping embedded objects from rebar to live wires, but with no data recording. Complex projects, such as civil works or power plants, demand the power and documentation capabilities of a PS 300.

Retrofit and seismic upgrades

The older the building, the more unreliable the documentation. The only certain method of knowing where all the rebar, PT tendons and hidden objects are located is to scan it yourself.

The PS 1000 can find objects even deep within concrete.

2. Do I need to save scan data and produce documentation?

Yes – structural surveys with analysis and documentation

All Hilti concrete scanners display imagery in real time, but not all record the data. If you need to keep scan information for detailed analysis back in the office, the PS 300 Ferroscan and the PS 1000 X-Scan offer the connectivity you require.

Raw concrete survey data can be transferred to the PROFIS Detection PC software. From there, 2D and 3D images can be studied and exported to CAD/BIM. With one click, PROFIS Detection can generate structural reports on a template of your choice.

No – mark-up and analysis on site

The PS 50 multidetector and the PX 10 transpointer and designed for on-the-job scanning and marking up. They are extremely simple to use and provide a quick way of preventing delays due to cut rebar, cables or pipes. However, neither tool saves the survey data.

Alternatively, the PSA 200 tablet can equip the PS 1000 X-Scan for detailed 3D structural analysis directly on the jobsite. This can speed-up the decision-making process and help to ensure data integrity.
